D.M.S.R. 08.>14. jamming This IS the complete 70-minute performance recorded in VG+ (if not EX-) quality, (supposedly the audio derives from pro-shot video that was made that night). However the rehearsal disc is lesser quality and incomplete. Comments: This is MUST HAVE. Period. Shut the door, close all curtains, turn off the lights and put on purple candles if you want to. Tell your wife'n'kidzz to go to the mall/the grandparents/the movies/the zoo etc. Now play your amp to the max: this is HISTORY in the making !!! :) While the show is widely recognized by many fans & collectors as one of the very best and most remembered among Prince's performances, it saw the live premiere of no less than 5 "Purple Rain" songs almost a year ahead of the film & album release, notwithstanding the ONLY, electrifying rendition of 'Electric Intercourse' (an unreleased outtake that was planned for possible inclusion in "Purple Rain" - it was replaced by 'The Beautiful Ones') as well as the first time Prince performed his cover version of Joni Mitchell's 'A Case Of You'. The latter would become a live favorite over the years, most notably during the piano medleys Prince is so fond of (it was heavily played on 2002's One Nite Alone Tour, and featured occasionnally during the 1990 Nude Tour), only here he sings it accompanying himself on guitar. The concert also saw the live debut of a young, 18-year old guitarist : Wendy Melvoin. It was recorded using a mobile recording unit brought from NY, and basic tracks were used for the last 3 songs off the "Purple Rain" album. It was also the first time the band were referred to as "Prince And The Revolution". So you're about to witness Prince in the spectacular process of catapulting himself into superstardom, no less. (I know this sounds pretentious but hey, for once, it's TRUE!!) Disc 1 is the best release of this show so far, beating all previous versions. Disc 2 incorrectly indicates the rehearsal as being from "the afternoon", however it is believed to be from July 1983 instead. This release omits no less than 5 songs from the rehearsal ('Computer Blue','Automatic','I Would Die 4 U','Baby I'm A Star' and 'Purple Rain') which can be found full-blown in its entire 89-minutes as part of Sabotage's 'Purple Rush' series. |
