Lineage: SBD > ??? > Silver > EAC > SHN 01. Stone Free 02. Fire 03. Message To Love 04. Lover Man 05. Foxy Lady 06. Ezy Rider 07. Star Spangled Banner 08. Purple Haze 09. Voodoo Child (slight return) 10. Outro: Stage Anouncements This is a bootleg from the "New York Pop" festival 1970-07-17. On this CD Red House is not included cause it's been officially released (although butchered) on the "Concerts" CD. All Along the Watchtower has never surfaced on SBD so we're left with the tracks presented on this CD. According to "Ask the Axis" this is the official setlist. (Setlist): Stone Free; Fire; Red House; Message To Love; Lover Man; All Along The Watchtower; Foxy Lady; Ezy Rider; Star Spangled Banner; Purple Haze; Voodoo Child (SR) I might as well include the piece they wrote about this show and the missing tracks. From Chris Dixon's 30th Anniversary Series © C S Dixon July 17, 2000 marks 30 years since Jimi's 1970 appearance at the New York (City) Pop Festival. The concert took place in Downing Stadium on Randall's Island in the East River off the northern end of Manhattan. The producers were apparently friends with Alan Douglas, who persuaded Jimi to appear... but later said he wished he hadn't. Though it boasted an impressive line up, this was a typically disorganized rock fest of the era (oddest act on the bill was the following night, when they advertised The Tony Williams Lifetime w/ John McLaughlin and Larry Young to be jamming with Jack Bruce, Eric Clapton and Miles Davis... doubt very much that it happened, or was ever agreed to by all the participants (esp. EC)!). This was Jimi's last ever appearance in his beloved NYC, and a rather inauspicious farewell to his adopted hometown. As it happens, the show wasn't too far from Harlem, where Jimi's NYC adventure had started some 5 years earlier and where, in Sept 69, he had expressed a wish that Woodstock-like festivals could be more accesible to city kids. The New York Pop experience (small 'e', thank you) may not have been what he had in mind, however. As was so typical with large-scale shows of the time, the schedule ran drastically overtime and Jimi ended up going onstage at about 4 in the morning. The late hour and the unruly crowd (reportedly with a high percentage of gatecrashers, as the fest had been partially "liberated for the people" by several NYC left-wing cells, some of whom were apparently to share in the proceeds), not to mention the all too frequent equipment problems, conspired to cause an uneven performance by the band. This show was professionally filmed and recorded and both are said to lurk in the Experience Hendrix archives. To date the only officially released material from the show has been the 'Red House' audio (on the old 'Concerts' release) and color film footage (w/sound) of FL and SSB, used in a movie of the fest the following year called 'Free' and another from a couple of years later called 'The Day The Music Died'. Thankfully, the (almost) full soundboard recording circulates (audience tapes remain the only source for 'Watchtower'). The soundboard tape, though very good quality, could use a remix IMO and the film looks salvageable (it's up-close footage and at least a two camera shoot, though the lighting is a bit dark) The show is yet another candidate for proper audio and video compilation (someday...). The audience tape I have (there are at least two circulating) would probably rate an 'excellent' mix for a audience tape, and the vocals are especially loud and clear in the house for once. The poster states that sound is by Hanley, of Woodstock, Fillmore, Atlanta Pop, etc, fame (also, the poster advertised closed circuit projection TV at the shows- if it happened, that would mean there were video cameras onsite). Enjoy another liberated bootleg from the "Tricky versus the Overpriced Bootleg Market" tour. Remember to pass it on. /Tricky **** Ask The Axis **** http://www.digitalhighway.co.uk/axis/index.htm **** Ask The Axis **** |
