Note | taper's Notes:
I made a trip out to Kansas City to see a Van Halen friend who resides in Springfield, MO, who road-tripped himself and brought one of his friends. Fortunately, I had a blast in spite of the bad performance by the band. To read up on my review of this performance and my time in Kansas City, go here: http://www.diamonddavidleeroth.com/forums/index.php?topic=18639 As far as the recording goes, it would be a solid A if not for the loud, booming bass element. I didn't feel like equalizing the bass, and no volume adjustment was needed, so I did not change the audio properties of my master recording at all. So this is the raw master recording; the only editing was cutting up the WAV's and converting to FLAC. With respect to the bass issue, I set the battery box to a 95 Hz rolloff as I have done on all the other shows I've taped with this gear, but the bass is nevertheless too loud. The bass was very loud and thumping where I was sitting, so I guess in that sense you're getting a good representation of what it sounded like from my seat. I was sitting next to a wall which kind of divides the sections of the upper bowl of the Sprint Center, so this may have contributed or caused the bass boom. If someone wants to remaster and get rid of the excess bass, go for it. Even with the bass issue, I think it's far and away my best Van Halen recording, and it holds its own pretty well with the best recordings so far on this tour. Otherwise, the recording is surprisingly up front for a nosebleed section recording, and very clear with almost no audience chatter. There is good dynamic range and good stereo separation as this time, I had the time to get set up properly. I made sure to sit basically motionless the entire time to get a nice, consistent sound throughout. Between "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" and "1984" I decided to goof off and state the band, venue, city and date, along with stating that there will be an encore, in homage to the taper of Van Halen, Greensboro February 3, 1984 who said something similar in his recording. After "Jump," I also decided to ask for the opinions of the two people I saw the show with, and give my own opinion, in tribute to the taper of Van Halen, Philadelphia March 21, 1984 and his friend Gary C. who did the same thing 23 years ago. Finally, this recording is "marked" by my friend intentionally blowing a whistle at a few points, most of them at the end of the show, which is "homage" to the notorious horn that marked the Van Halen, Oakland June 11, 1981 audience recording. Finally, if any of you heard/saw someone playing piano at the Holiday Inn Aladdin in Kansas City until 2:30 AM after the show, that was me. FFP, shntool results and ticket are included. |
