I'm more of a STP fan, I've seen them three times in concert, they were a great band, and I miss them. As for Velvet Revolver, I did get a chance to see them in Hamilton during their short " RNFR" Canadian Tour. I mostly went because of Scott, he is a magnificent show man and lyricist, really knows how to work the audience and give a crowd what they want, at least that's what I got out of him from the Pilot days, so I wanted to se if that energy carried over to Velvet Revolver. I got their late, I had a school function that was a must to attend, after it was all over around 9:00 P.M ( Which was when the band was to take the stage), I bolted out to the Coliseum. Couldn't get in at first, the security personnel usually believe that anyone who shows up to a concert with a ticket this late probably purchased it from a scalper or it's a last minute fake, something of that nature, so they wouldn't let me in at first. But they did let me in, and I caught about an hour and a half of their show. I was seated on the floor, the pit was insane, I didn't go into the pit because I don't like to push through people to get up close, I like to get there before the show starts and try and plant myself in an area, besides, a lot of people were coming out of the show hurt. They had a lot of flashy special effects, and a huge light up sign of their name, but it was a great show. Scott was wearing a stormtrooper hat ( like Jimmy Page in Chicago in 1977), and was mostly singing through his Bullhorn. Slash was wearing a Canadian flag shirt, he took it off for the encore and tossed it into the crowd. From what I saw, it was a great performance, I was hoping that a recording would show up sometime, I'd be extremely grateful if someone would share that someday, they played " Vasaline" that nigtht. It was good night, and I started picking up Velvet shows to see how they performed at other venues. I really enjoy the energy of this show, I think they were really having fun performing, and were enjoying sharing ( what was back then) their new material. The audience recording is longer than the soundboard tape, the soundboard is missing the introduction, and cuts into the last 2 minutes of " Suckertrain Blues", and fades out a few seconds after they finished " No More, No More", the audience tape continues a few seconds after the soundboard tape. On the audience tape, the introduction is a part of " Suckertrain Blues", but I thought it should've been separated. The announcer says " New Orleans!....You wanted the best....well they couldn't fuckin' make it...From Hollywood, California.....Velvet Revolver!" The goal of this project was to bring new life into the show, each tape has it's strengths, the soundboard has very crisp vocals and the drums are coming in nicely, but does have a little too much treble on it. The audience recordings vocals and drums were kind of dull, I don't know how far the taper was from the stage, but there must've been some distance for the vocals to be slightly distant in the recording, but it did have strong bass, and of course the crowd comments together create excellent ambiance. Artwork has been included, again, my thanks go out to Donkyflip on doing such a beautiful job on it, and for all the help and advice on the tracks. All the photos used in the art are actually from their performance at Voodoo Fest. We hope you all enjoy! Cheers! |
