Comment | The "Hallucinogenic Recipe" box set was manufactured by Alley Kat records, the same company responsible for the infinitely more comprehensive "Into The Black" box set for Nirvana. Because of this, the set is a bit disappointing, especially since it isn't until disc 4 that actual Pearl Jam material starts to appear. The Mother Love Bone demos disc was also released as a bootleg entitled "In Memory Of Andrew Wood, while disc two's Stone Gossard demos are similar to material that appears on the widely circulated "Gossman Project" bootleg. Eddie's home demos are interesting, particularly for an early version of what would become "Betterman". However, most fans will be intrigued by the potential, but wishing there was more revelation of the creation process for future Pearl Jam material. Disc four is a collection of outtakes, which is quite outdated at this point, featuring only less-than-rare session work from "Ten" and "Vs." The one revelation here is "Girl", a very cool song that was never developed beyond the rough demo featured here. "Whipping" appears twice, credited as both "The Whipping" and "Don't Need", and "Hard To Imagine" and "Alone" would later be cleaned up and released on the "Lost Dogs" compilation. The most frustrating aspect of "Recipe" is the fact that a band so richly celebrated for their live performances is only glossed over in that arena here. Disc five features the only live Pearl Jam material in the set, and the show is not even presented in it's entirety. Even more puzzling is the fact that Alley Kat cut several songs from the show to fit the performance onto one disc, yet left room for two unconnected filler tracks at the end. For those interested in the pre-Pearl Jam activity of the members, this is a nice find. But, as an actual PEARL JAM set, this is far from essential. |
