J-Card Comment | Artist - The Ramones Date - 1979/03/07 Venue - The Decade, Pittsburgh (Oakland), PA Setlist And Fingerprints - Lineage - Unknown mic > unknown analog tape recorder > unknown master tape > Sony HF90 normal bias tape (3rd gen.) > Sony TC-WE805S stereo cassette deck > Aiwa XC-RW700 CD/CD recorder > Sony CD-R Audio 80 min. CD > Cakewalk Pyro 2005 (giant wav files onto HD here) > Cakewalk Pyro 2005 (tracked wav files here) > Trader's Little Helper (encode wav to flac, level 8, align on sector boundaries) 35 tracks or 32 tracks, one CD 35 tracks (with crowd noise) TT: 69:30 32 tracks (minus crowd noise) TT: 63:21 This is the ENTIRE concert. I was NOT present at this show, although I had been to the Decade many, many times before and after this concert. I was given this tape by a long-time Pittsburgh resident/tape trader about 19 years ago. He told me that it was a 3rd gen tape and I have no reason to doubt that statement. That's about all that I know. Here is a brief synopsis of the recording, good points and bad... Good points: 1) This is a COMPLETE recording of the show. 2) There is no distortion in this recording. There are no speed problems or other faults to detract from your enjoyment of the show. 3) There's not much talking at all around the taper. There's no whistling or shrieking. There ARE constant comments shouted out from the crowd but only after the musical selection is finished. 4) All instruments and vocals are clearly heard. You can actually understand most of what Joey is singing. This is a much clearer tape than the last Ramones tape that I posted, so if you liked that, you'll love this... Bad points: 1) There IS a little hiss to this recording. It's pretty mild compared to some tapes I've heard of this era and generation. You should not find it intrusive. 2) The following comment is more subjective than objective, but I'll make it anyway : The audience at this show HAD to be one of the most vicious, nastiest, rudest bunch of assholes ever assembled in any venue on the planet. The audience was very HOSTILE towards the Ramones and I have no idea why. Here are some sample insults from the crowd ; you'll hear them clearly on the CD if you listen closely: "New York sucks!" "You suck!" "Fuck you!" "Your mother blows sailors!" "Play something good!" "Wake up, Dee Dee!" "Hey ugly!" And the list goes on and on.... Like I said, I have no idea what people's problems were that night but it is really painful and embarrassing to listen to how the people of Pittsburgh, PA treated these poor guys who were there to play music for their fans.....WOW....... Lastly, if you're a rabid Ramones fan, you may know that this tape is sometimes labeled as being from the Electric Banana, Pittsburgh, PA using the same date. I don't mean to piss anybody off but I don't think that this is correct and here's why: 1) The guy who gave me the tape was pretty much an expert on the local music scene and was focused on details. He said that the concert was played at the Decade. That was good enough for me. 2) The Decade (may it rest in peace) had large thin copper or brass metal sheets hanging on its walls. On these in black enamel paint were written the names and dates of EVERY SINGLE BAND that had ever played there since the place opened. The last time that I was there was in late 1990 before it closed. I clearly recall seeing the Ramones listed on one of the copper sheets but do not remember the exact date, but I think it was 3/7/1979. I know that this is not proof of much, but it still leads you in the right direction. IF anybody was there at this show & CLEARLY recalls the correct venue OR if any ticket stubs exist (which I doubt) OR if you have a newspaper review or a handbill or printed announcement, PLEASE post your info here and we can get this uncertainty cleared up. Thanks very much in advance !!! I didn't find anything on the Internet... Well, that's about all that I can think of to say, so let's wrap this up. Finally, no buy, no sell, no mp3. Please seed this as long as you can. Please trade this freely as it is probably fairly uncirculated. This show will be a welcome addition to any Ramones fan's collection. I will post a sample to help some of you decide whether or not to get it, but trust me, it's a really good show. That's about as accurate an assessment of the show as I can give. The setlist should be 100% correct. If it's not, let me know. The 3 tracks listed as crowd noise are just that ; no music is present in them. You can delete them & everything will sound great. So, as Mr. Natural is so fond of saying, have fun, don't freak out and enjoy the concert ! Hey ho, let's go again....... |
