Tech Note | Here's what the j-card of the DAT says: "Radio Free LA was broadcast over the internet and selected radio stations around the US on 1/20/97. Live performances from members of Rage Against the Machine, Beck, and Cypress Hill. Thanks go to Matt for taping this from the satellite feed, Gary for providing the seed, and Kirk for the set- list." Some of the track intersections are a little off--Cool Edit Pro's cue points and CDWAVE's splits seem to measure the time a little differently, and the breaks come a little early because I used CEP's times to split the files in CDWAVE. Radio Free Los Angeles was held January 20, 1997, in answer to the inauguration of President Bill Clinton. That election had resulted in one of the lowest voter turnouts in the history of the country, as more and more Americans came to realize that their government was not in their hands, but in the hands of big business. Radio Free L.A. provided a musical and political gathering point for the majority of Americans--and young people especially--who rightly felt left out of the "democratic process." Radio Free L.A. consists of segments and interviews featuring Michael Moore, Emily Hodgson, Leonad Peltier, Chuck D, Mumia Abu-Jamal, UNITE, Noam Chomsky, Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls, and Subcomandante Marcos of the Zapatistas. It was an amazing project to put together, from waiting on phone calls from death row, to sending emissaries into the jungles of Chiapas with our questions, to rolling with laughter at the telephone exploits of Michael Moore, it was an experience I won't soon forget. Musically, Beck, Cypress Hill, Flea and Stephen Perkins stepped to the plate and agreed to perform at this controversial show that was broadcast to radio stations around the world. Radio programmers had no idea what they were getting when they agreed to broadcast Radio Free L.A.: the Woody Guthrie-esque Beck set; the bong-laced Cypress Hill hip hop jams; the turned inside-out, reworked Rage tracks; all intercut with the "greatest hit-makers" of contemporary radical politics. |
