NoteThe Heartless Bastards - January 25, 2007. The Knitting Factory, Los Angeles

I used a Sony TCD-8 DAT recorder with a Soundman OKM-II binaural mic. Transferred via analogue cable to Tascam CD-RW 700 disc burner. Imported to a computer via Toast.

OK - some notes on the show. The Knitting Factory, unlike the Heartless Bastards, is a taper non-friendly sort of place. I did not get a chance to look at my levels on this show at all for fear of being asked to leave. Therefore, the sound is a little hot. The microphone was hanging out of my collar. It still sounds pretty good - especially considering I seem to be the only person recording this band!

There was a guy in front of me who was dancing and singing - you hear him a little if you listen closely. When I was a teenager going to shows I would have looked at the guy and thought - what a dork! This night I looked at him and was very happy - he was having more fun than anybody else - if you're out there guy, I told you I'd put this show up, and here it is.

The band - tight. Very very tight. They also play a lot of songs - 18 on this show. That seems like a lot when most bands seem to play 45 minute shows these days. There is no jamming in this band - they pretty much play the songs like it's on the record, only louder and a little more rough maybe. But they play great, so you should want to hear them.

Last thing. Buy their records. They have two available and both are amazing. The 2nd album may even be better than the first - not something a lot of bands are able to accomplish. So buy the records from Amazon or emusic or, better yet, at a record store if you can find one.

The band, last time I saw them, gave permission to record the show and asked if I would send them a copy. The place they played this night - The Knitting Factory - has a green room, so I couldn't get to the band to ask. I'm sure it's the same answer as last time. I am sending a copy in the mail tomorrow.

Enjoy.
