In Fall of 1982 The Who went of the first or their "Farewell Tours", and for this US leg they mostly concentrated their shows on the giant stadium circuit, in a manner perfected by The Stones. The Clash had been riding high in the USA with their greatest commrecial successes in the singles "Should I Stay Or Should I Go?" and "Rock the Casbah", and the album Combat Rock.
For the most part the usual AOR suspects were enlisted as support acts (Santana, Jethro Tull, Loverboy) but for some of the coastal shows The Who invited The Clash to open, supposedly at Pete Townshend's request. At this time in the US there was still a deep level of vitriol directed at "new wave" bands like The Clash from those music fans with tastes more in line with what is now known as "classic rock", and The Who counted plenty of that type amongst their fans, some of which can be heard here.
Offered up are two examples of this pairing. Other shows The Clash played on were 25-09-1982 JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, 26-09-1982 Rich Stadium in Buffalo, 12/13-10-1982 Shea Stadium in New York, and 25-10-1982 also in Oakland.
The Oakland recording is from a good quality AUD source. The LA purports to be a SBD, and if it isn't it has sound quality similar to a board source.
