Description This is one I got from Justin. To my ears, this is more or less the same as the silver boots, one of which is called All I Want is U2 (it goes by other names). This one has somewhat known lineage. According to Justin, this is from a second gen DAT, but I don't know what that means really. This one definitely has some hiss though, which leads me to believe it was originally analog.

Anyway, the source of this was apparently Steve Vahey, whom I haven't spoken to in years. Are you around Steve? If anyone can fill in the gaps, I'd much appreciate it. In lieu of the full lineage, I have included a frequency and spectral analysis.

UPDATE: The correct lineage is, (??? > 2nd gen. analog cassette > DAT, AKA "Goodnight from Lovetown")

Taper and equipment unknown

But for those of you who have not heard this show, it might be the best show U2 ever played. It's certainly in my top three or so, and I can't think of a show off the top of my head that I can say is better. In addition, by my taste in recordings, I think this recording is phenominal. Aside from crowd noise, it has great atmosphere and everything is very clear.

Sound Quality:
A - A+++ Audience

Notes (Justin Cook):

...this bootleg was mastered from a second generation DAT. Sound quality and clarity are phenomenal. The overall sound is very crisp and there is very little background noise. A quick check of the recording revealed only one very minor blemish, a few seconds of dead air between "When Love Comes To Town" and "Love Rescue Me".

Notes (Mike):

Justin mentions this is a second gen DAT. I don't know exactly what that means, but there it is. Nothing much to add, this is the same recording used for "All I Want is U2" and the copies of that (see FLOM). Were it not for the audience noise, which sometimes is nonexistent but sometimes borders on intrusive, this would be about the best audience recording ever. The sound is just amazingly powerful and clear, like the Dublin LoveTown shows, only this is an audience recordings. I think it's a bit better than the other bootlegs, but not that much. Considering the source though, it's nice to have. No flaws to speak of other than above, and that some crowd noise (as on the bootlegs) seems to be edited out (unless it's just a fade where the recording stopped briefly), but no songs are missing. If you have no other recording of this show, or really love it, not a bad item to trade for.

My Rating:

looking at the merry go round of comments, and listening to the sample, this is probably NOT the Ard Stegamn version. That being said there are plenty of versions out there of this show. Now while the Ard one is closer as mike said, he also said in the Amsterdam thread he didnt like the closer version and thought it was over-rated. Its all personal prefernce. The one trevor lists looks like the one that came through me at some point. The exact lineage on that is Ards master > Steve Hendryx on DAT at 32khz> Clone to me, then I made the CDs of it way back when

I have another version of this show that I considered the best pre-ards. That was Marcel Anders version (remember I posted Marcel Anders 12-18 back 6 months ago or so). It was more distant but really clean and nice. The Anders sounded more like this one, but then again this one sounds like anyone that would have used a D6/good mic from mid audience at the Ahoy

My Rating:

Yes, I believe what Trevor refers to is that other Stegamn source.

I do love this recording though, I think it's just amazing.

Regarding the Anders 12/18 you posted a while back, I liked that one too, but not as much as the commercial boots which I believe were also different. It's still on my HD to speed correct before I get it off my HD.

So, as I understand it, there three versions of this show:

1. Ard Stegamn (close)
2. Marcel Anders (more distant)
3. THIS ONE (Taper unknown, also more distant, also the source of the silver bootlegs such as All I Want is U2).

And there are three sources for 12/18 as well:

1. Ard Stegamn (close)
2. Marcel Andres (more distant)
3. Amsterdam XXX Lovetown/Welcome to Lovetown silver boots (again, different source, and again my favorite)

My Rating:

So, just to be clear, here is the updated lineage, thanks to mauxworld, and attached is an updated info file in lieu of redoing the entire torrent.

(Unknown taper and equipment > 2nd gen. analog cassette > DAT)
AKA "Goodnight from Lovetown"

Also, to be clear, this is the same recording (i.e., same taper/equipment) used for the silver boots "All I Want is U2" and others (they had bonus tracks from the other Dutch shows). If you already have one of those, you might want to conserve your bandwidth. However, I don't know what gen tape was used to make those silver boots - it could be higher, lower or the same, and they might have had done other things to it, but regardless it is very similar sounding, probably not different enough to justify the better rating Justin gave it on his site.
