SAB 14 - Palais des Sports, Dijon, France 06/03/78

Source graciously provided by: AV
Speed correction, phase restoration and overall tech support: TM Productions
All other remastering phases: SAB Recordings

When I first heard this show about two years ago, I was at first surprised that it had surfaced (like most of you) and was somewhat disappointed that a then rare soundboard recording from this amazing tour sounded, well, like crap. I later obtained AV's version which corrected a lot of issues with the original recording I had received, but still lacked in many areas sonically. (To my ears anyway.) In August of this year, I began the undertaking that would result in the remastered show that you're now listening to. After obtaining AV's permission to use his corrected and edited version of his recording, I began with EQing the show properly, which in turn increased the hiss level of an already hissy recording. This was corrected with both Waves X-Noise and Soundsoap Pro plug-ins. After adding compression and limiting (and a few other ingredients) a version was sent out for review to about six sets of ears, one set of which belonged to Tom Morgenstern of TM Productions. TM made a few suggestions to improve the source, with phase and speed correction being the key fixes needed. After TM completed his work using CEDAR, the files were sent back to me for final tweaks. Minor EQ adjustments were made to bring up the bass and mid sections, and reverb was added to remove some of the 'dry' sound. There are two edits, one on each disc, which were necessary for missing (non musical) material. The edits were completed via crossfades. Yes, there is still some hiss on this recording, as going further would have created sonic artifacts. Now this version is by no means the definitive version of this show, but I believe it's the best that we have for now.

Many thanks go to AV for providing a well edited source, to the Meeks Genesis boys for the use of their ears, and especially to TM Productions for his work, suggestions and tech support. The final result could not have been achieved
without TM's help.

I hope you enjoy it.

Just a few words from AV:

When Dan first communicated to me his desire to remaster Dijon 78, I was suddenly very happy. The raw source I had released a few years ago is simply a tape-to-cd transfer of the complete soundboard recording, nothing more, nothing less. A proper remaster was therefore strongly needed, but it wasn't a work for just anybody, as there were too many variables to take in consideration (hiss removing, EQing, speed correction, sound balancing...) which needed to be addressed separately but carefully, as correcting a problem in one area created a problem(s) in others. Dan was clearly the right person to embark on a job as hard and difficult as this. His skills and experience are well known to everybody, and for that reason every new SAB release is always awaited by many people like an official release. I'm one of those people. To me, only Dan and Tom (TM Productions) are able to give their products the "official" taste.
As underlined by Dan, Tom's involvement in this project has been pivotal but never predominating: if only the powerful people in the world could cooperate like them; the world would be a better place!
Now that I've listened to the final version of SAB14 I feel this is a completely different show than the one I had originally put in to circulation as AV06. SAB14 has a full, warm, detailed sound. It is a spring of colors. My original AV06 pales like an old 8mm film compared to the 3-D widescreen of SAB14.
So, thank you Dan for having brought a new life to this great show, which everybody now can listen to in its true powerful glory.

This was fun - an international cooperation (USA-Italy-Holland-Germany) with some great conversations and good mood. I really enjoyed it.
Though the result is stunning to my ears, it was not initially planned to do it in this way, it rather developed during the process and so the workflow could still be improved for further releases .
Anyway, thanks to Willem for providing his FTP-server, the artwork and starting of this torrent. To Alessandro, for the source and the painstaking search for dropouts and clicks. And finally to Dan who was always open for suggestions and ideas and who made the best out of it soundwise.

Glad everyone like the results. As Tom stated earlier, this was a team effort across the board. (In essence, these files crossed the pond two or three times during the process.) My initial results were good, but I was pushed to improve them thanks to suggestions and ideas by Tom and some of the Meeksters. An enjoyable project, and I'm looking forward to others.
