The Davis Septet was booked for several nights at the Jazz Workshop in mid-October 1973, and there is an audience recording of two sets from another show during this engagement. Given the tunes performed here, this is probably from the second of two sets on this date.

A week earlier, Liebman took a couple days off to record Lookout Farm at Generation Sound Studios in New York (October 10-11).
