Note | World's shitiest venue, now affectionately called "Allstate Arena". Good recording considering the poor acoustics. This was one of the 1st times I had ever seen the band in such a large venue and it took some getting used to considering the last time I'd seen them was in a Florida bar. A solid 1st set with an early version of "Free" which was pretty incredible. Trey was going off on a metal chair with a drum stick in sync w/ Fishman. Great jams. Guyute seemed almost operaesque until they kicked into a smokin' Antelope (arent they all smokin?) Harpua was a nice set closer, but we were more excited about the upcoming 2nd set which was still a mystery considering last years Halloween cover set of the Beatles White Album. Not being a serious Who fan, however I thought the Quadrophenia set was more of a snooze with a few exceptions (disks 2 & 3). Its a pretty mellow album, but the Real Me, Helpless Dancer, & Drowned were great renditions. Love Reign Over Me was worth the price of admission, nice intensity. The 3rd set was all kinds of fun, including a spooky You Enjoy Myself clocking at 40 minutes. The "Jesus Left Chicago" is one of my all time favorites, and Page sang it with a particular grit that night making it a highlight. I've always been amazed at his playing, his piano solos here are particularly sweet. The Band was very tight, and you could tell that they were comfortable playing with the Giant Country Horns who have some great solos, all blues. This was followed by the Beatles "A Day in the Life" with nice horns and one of the few duets played that night. Suzi Greenberg had the place rockin and Horns were going off. The encore was a great acoustic sing along "My Generation", complete with the destruction of Trey's guitar as the banjo and bass played on. Nice.

Comment | Set 2 featured the complete performance of The Who's Quadrophenia album with The Giant Country Horns (Don Glasgo on Trombone and French Horn, Dave Grippo on Tenor Saxophone, Alan Parshley on Trombone and Joey Sommerville on Trumpet). Before the encore, a Keith Moon replica drum set was setup. Then Fishman and Trey destroyed the drum set ala The Who of old. Finally, a stagehand brings Trey a large plunger, Trey depresses it, setting of a big explosion backstage. * - w/ The Giant Country Horns ^ - w/ Dave Grippo On Tenor Saxophone # - Acoustic Performance |
