Tech Note | **Remastered** by thir13en My FAQ: Mogwai 2002-05-25 Fireside Bowl Chicago SBD>DAT I thought it was time to shake things up a bit, throw out an artist that has yet to see the Zomb. But there is a connection. I've seen somewhere, someplace, one of those sites where you're looking for one thing and it will list a bunch of "similar" things. Mogwai has come up a few times while looking at Pumpkins stuff. There is a similarity, though it's mostly confined to the guitar sound. Some solo's and harmonic distorted parts can remind one of certain hypnotic guitar orgies the Pumpkins have pulled off from time to time. Otherwise, it stands on it's own as something quite different, but very pleasing to the ears and mind. The genius of Mogwai is their play of dynamics, the tug and pull of light to heavy, bright to dim. They create mostly instrumental songscapes (a few rare songs have actual vocals) that tend to venture from very low and serene quiet passages to last-second drops of intense distortion-laden madness. But even the madness is harmonic and contains a certain hum-along focus. And listen to how the crowd plays along with the heavy parts, seemingly trying to scream and howl above the din. Mogwai will always prevail though. These Glaswegian lads have mastered the dynamic art, and in their live performance they prove there is no studio volume trick to it, they really do know how to actually play it that way. The trick is of course the soft parts, because anybody can play loud, but to style it the way they do is true musicianship. I didn't play too much with the dynamics, it's the way they intended it. My only advice is be careful if you think it sounds real low and you crank the volume, because they will hit you eventually. I did use a very slight compression so the low passages wouldn't be lost completely, then beefed and brightened the whole spectrum, and lastly the digital saturation. I'm a big fan of these guys, they are an intense musical barrage. I hope those of you who are unfamiliar with them will give it a go, you won't be disappointed. My favorite is "Yes! I Am A Long Way From Home". 1. You Don't Know Jesus 2. Mogwai Fear Satan 3. Star Wars 4. Cody 5. Christmas Steps 6. C# (Hunted By A Freak) 7. Yes! I Am A Long Way From Home 8. Helicon 1 9. 2 Rights Make 1 Wrong 10.
