Golden Palomino's New Jazz at The Public concert series Public Theatre New York City August 6 1982 Anton Fier Drums Arto Lindsay Guitar,Voice John Zorn Reeds,Game Calls Jamaaladeen Tacuma Bass Bill Laswell Bass David Moss Drums,Percussion,Voice Aud>Sony D5>cass(a few gen)>Peak>Xact>shn This was, for a few years, my Holy Grail. Having attended this show (Yes, I'm one of the slack-jawed concert goers you can hear cracking up during Zorn's first solo). It took me a few years to track down the recording of what I fondly remember as the most glorious racket I'd ever heard. This was the second ever performance by the band, with David Moss replacing David Van Tiegham, and Holy shit, what a show it was. A near perfect blend of post-punk, harmolodics, free-improv noise, and bone-rattling funk. Although they perform a lot of the structures that would later make up their debut LP, here they have a much looser, organic feel, with nary a drum machine in sight. The interplay between Tacuma and Laswell suggests some new breed of multi-armed bass monster. Moss was a one-man orchestra with his Bertoia sound sculptures, and amazing vocal range. Zorn and Lindsay did what they do best, and Fier pummeled his kit, whilst more or less successfully, imposing some order on the proceedings....If Beefhearts' Magic Band ever had any east-coast competition, it would be these guys. The concert was in 2 sets; tracks 1-3 the first, and tracks 4-7 the second. The tape is a decent recording from about halfway back in the hall, there are a few seconds missing at the beginning of a couple of the tracks, but otherwise its the complete show. Enjoy! |
