CommentFrom a 1968 Gene Shay interview with Joni, I can now provide this bit of trivia.

The Posall and The Mosalm are characters from a mythology Joni developed in the 1960s. Their names are acronyms:
Posall = Perhaps Our Souls Are Little Ladies
Mosalm = Maybe Our Souls Are Little Men

Sisotowbel is also an acronym:
Somehow In Spite Of Trouble Ours Will Be Everlasting Love
