NoteHmm. This recording should be better then it is. As Galen remarked, it does sound like some omni mics far back in the venue. Normally, you can’t go too wrong with a pair of cards and a DAT in a large venue situation like this. At times, the recording is hollow, distant, and distorted. However, the sound does improve after the first few songs and is definitely listenable. Regardless, we have a recording of this night and that is what’s most important in these early, too-often-not-taped ’96 – ’97 shows.

It’s the first night of the Lollapalooza tour, and Tool is jacked up on nervous energy. The band flies through the songs as their set lasts just over an hour. It’s a stripped-down, basic Lolla setlist, with no lengthy improvs to introduce songs. They are feeling their performing oats on the large amphitheatre stage. The subsequent month and a half would see many more memorable performances, but here we get our first sense of how ON the band (particularly Maynard) would be during this tour.
