Note | This recording is stunning. The stereo presence in this recording can't be much better. He's using the Soundman mics & D100 to they're fullest potential. This one proves that DAT should never die. MJ is out front too much of the show (a rarity for this tour), which is one downside. But when he is not singing, the instruments are balanced well. And you can't find a much better replication of Danny's drums than here. The snare is barking, the toms are full and booming, and hi-hats, ride and cymbals pristine.
I've heard many better performances from the band, but there are few better recordings. This is all the more impressive considering the Sporthalle venue is known for its crappy, echoey sound. Some would argue the Schoeps sources of the '01 - '02 tour, or 11/23/96 or 2/27/97 are superior. But this one catches the ambience beautifully as well as it does the instruments. I'll take a good recording with great presence over an all-band, no-crowd FOS recording almost every time. But I think I'm in the minority. It's all personal preference. |
