Note | Essential albums:
'The Heart of Saturday Night'. To me, the quintessinal Waits lp. At his 70's best. Really, the perfect album. Every single song, perfection. 'Nighthawks at the Diner'. One of the rare record company releases where the live record is filled with new songs, songs he mostly (completely?) never put on any other album. A taste, live, of why so many of these shows rule. 'Small Change' is really equally perfect compared to Sat. Nite. It's him a bit more mature musically. 'Swordfishtrombones' The best of his 80's period. His decades are distinct musically. My favorites are the 70's and 80's then 00's. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Great: 'Beautiful Maladies'. A greatest hits of his 80's period. 'Rain Dogs' One classy Waits 80's lp. 'Big Time' Show time. A true artistic performance. What's way cool is the VHS release and the album only overlap some of the same songs. You sorta get almost 2 different releases of Big Time. Very cool. ~~~~~~~~ Check It Out: 'Foreign Affairs' I like it. Never thought of it has his greatest work but nice. 'Blue Valentine' The title song is incredible. It's not a super strong lp. 'Real Gone' Finally out of the 90's bleak period. 'Heartattack and Vine' Part of a trio with Foreign Affairs and Blue Valentine. All equally strong on occasion but not real magnificent lps overall. 'Orphans' I'm not sure why this gets such adulation. I do enjoy it. And the idea of dredging up unreleased good tunes and songs released on someone else's albums and so forth, I love that. I covers generally the 90's and 00's which to me are his weakest of the 4 decades of his career so I'm not mad about it. I do like the big booklet, all the photos. I waited to get my on the cheap and ended up w/ the smaller booklet version. Still, an outstanding package compared to the typical release in the music world. Now, if only he and his wife would do this same thing with a 3xCD of his various live shows. Whew doggy. He's got so many songs he's done at least somewhat differently live and some really are done better particularly in the 70's when he does the perfect sound of an engine not turning over and of cars whizzing by and another where he mentions all sorts of very famous folks comin' over to the bar. Covering his whole career, it'd be a heck of a release. |
