Note | Be Careful:
'Closing Time' It's well worth discovering. The early years. Not really ready for prime time but good stuff. 'Franks Wild Years' That song rules. The whole lp? Humm. Maybe I should give it another try... 'Mule Variations' The lp that broke him big (thank you Epitaph, Bad Religion's punk label!!). I'm not a big fan of this lp tho. It just doesn't get off the ground. Maybe the best of his 90's releases which, to me isn't saying much. Tho, it begs the question, is a mediocore or even weak Waits lp better than the average release of another performer? Sorta. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ For Fans Only (not even that): 'Alice' Read dog. I don't get this. Listened once. Cannot get into it. 'Blood Money' What? I see why it was released at the same time as Alice. Both go nowhere. Maybe someday I'll get this record. I doubt it. I wanna love all his records. Just cain't here. 'Bone Machine' Which one is worse, this or 'The Black Rider' Bone Machine is so bleak. Off the charts bleak and dark. Black Rider is maybe less of a dud than BM but I still don't like it. Now, I did attend the opera summer 06 in L.A. and musically it was outstanding. A 10 member Waitsian orchestra including saw and xylophone. Now I'd get an lp of that any day. Some songs totally ruled. And the main singer, all of them really, tended to sound Waitsish. I asked the main performer and he said ya sorta couldn't help it cuz Waits wrote 'em. If only. The BR show available in taperland is not nearly as satisfying musically as the one I attended. If only I'd brought something to remember it by. Oh well. It's in my head, like any great show. 'Night on Earth' soundtrack. Uh, I've got the 12". Not impressed. Nothin' like a real Waits release. I'd like to see the movie, see how it fits that. Very low key. Kinda like a background only soundtrack. |
