Comment | This is THE SHOW that turned David Leaf from a casual hits-oriented fan into the fan-atic that would one day write the best book ever on the group, "The Beach Boys And The California Myth" (not to mention the fact that he is now Brian Wilson's personal manager). In the special 50th issue of STOMP! (August 1985) David lists his ten (actually he cheated and listed 11) favorite Beach Boys concerts. Not surprisingly, this took first place. Here is what he said regarding this show: "1. Fall, 1971, Georgetown University: Don't even have to think about this. The band was at its performing peak, the material was a near-perfect blend of old and new, Dennis played ballads at the piano and Carl sang "Surf's Up", "Help Me Rhonda" was a revelation. On top of everything else, I had a free, second row seat" (because he was reviewing the show for his college newspaper)." .
Editor note: It's notable that Dennis performs "Barbara" and "I've Got A Friend", two songs that were unreleased at the time. Beach Boys present: Mike Love Dennis Wilson Carl Wilson Bruce Johnston Al Jardine Backup band included: Daryl Dragon |
