Comment | Elton John with Dee Murray, Nigel Olsson
November 1970 (possibly Nov. 12, 1970) On November 12, 1970, Elton John begins a 4 night stand opening for The Kinks. The bill also includes jazz-rock band Ballin' Jack and Juicy Lucy. Based on known setlists (above) and the fact that Wolfgang?s Vault is now broadcasting a ?Honky Tonk Women? from Nov. 12, I?m willing to bet that the 12th is the correct date for this show. (If anyone has a copy to compare this version to, please be my guest.) Elton had only made his US debut a couple of months earlier on Aug. 25th at the Troubadour where he played 6 nights in a row before returning to the UK (presumably) to record Tumbleweed Connection which was released on Oct. 30. Next the band performed 5 East Coast concerts in Boston, Philly and Baltimore before heading out west for 1 show in San Bernadino, CA. and the 4 Fillmore shows. 2 days after the last Fillmore show, Elton and the band were in NYC at A&R Studios for the in-studio radio concert which produced the classic live album ?11-17-70" (or as it was known everywhere else, ?17-11-70"!). This performance, only 5 days earlier, is very similar in feel and performance to that album. |
