Notes: For a while the date of this show had been lost to history. The previously circulating copies of this show have generally been listed with a 1996-xx-xx date. Recently a few internet archives have revealed the correct date of the show (and the propper spelling of the venue). The recording you now have is a recently reripped copy from the master done by the taper. Unlike previous circulating versions, this one should flow together nicely with no gaps and be considered an upgrade to all other copies. Taper's Notes: i went to that show with my ex-girlfriend and we both wanted to see the Softies. i only had the s/t ES album and i wasn't THAT into it, to be totally honest, but i was excited. Elliott sat on one PA speaker (the other one was broken) that was on the floor. the 50 or so kids there all sat on the floor in front of him while he played. i remember he was even more intimidating in person (that night he really looked tough, no one was saying a word to him, i think they were all scared, i was!) but he was saying some really funny stuff that night. he said "this place is so weird...there no drinking, no smoking, (the place was basically a hardcore/straight edge house)...no redneck waiting out back to kick my ass..." at which point some dude yells "he's in the bathroom!" and Elliott goes "oh, he's in the bathroom...good place for him..." it was all very humorous at the time. i also remember this metal guy i know, still plays in a metal-ie band around town, walked in during ES''s set and yelled "play some fucking metal!" while 50 quiet indie kids all gave him the stink-eye. hilarious. before Elliott played "condor ave." he said, "this is for my friend Tommy..." and i never knew who that was, always wondered. after the show, i followed Elliott outside onto the porch to see if i could get up enough nerve to tell him how much i enjoyed the show. he just leaned up against the wall smoking a cigarette and looked around at all the kids walking by. no one was talking to him, i'll always remember it clear as day like it happened yesterday. i stood right across from him on the porch but i couldn't bring myself to say a word to him. at one point he looked at me and i realized he knew i'd been looking at him, at which point i totally chickened out and walked back inside to find my girlfriend. |
