| Tech Note | While ripping this CD for the current post, I ran into some problems I wanted to relate. The source was the original gold CD on the Hiwatt label. Both CDs play flawslessly on my CD player. But on the computer, it's a different story. CD 2 refused to even load on my USB Iomega ZIP CDRW drive at work, but worked properly in the Dell CD player and in my Plextor PlexWriter 12/10/32S and UltraPlex 40Xmax drives at home. CD 1 presented more of a challenge. All but 2 of the 19 tracks played and ripped correctly. However, EAC could not complete a rip of tracks 16 and 19. In each case, it would get to a point and just stop dead. I could close the program (with effort), but the computer would not shut down properly and would go through the disk scans at start-up. I then tried ripping those tracks with ECDC. It also locked up on track 16 (same reboot problems) but eventually completed the rip of the last track. The track was, however, riddled with errors. I ended up hooking my CD player up to my sound card (Echo Darla) and recording those tracks, then used Cool Edit Pro to make composites with as much of the digital rip as was usable. The edits were seamless and, to my ears, there was no audible difference in the sound quality of the CD rip and the audio capture. So, is this actually a copy protected bootleg, or an inadvertant manufacturing defect? Mick craymcl@my-deja.com |
