Lydia Kavina [RUS] - theremin, ANS synthesizer Barbara Buchholz [GER] - theremin Wilco Botermans [NL] - theremin, Moogerfoogers & effects Pamelia Kurstin [US] - theremin Virginia McKnight [US] - piano INFO: Lydia Kavina is one of the world's most renowned theremin players, composers, and master teachers. Born in Moscow, she was taught by Leon Theremin himself, and became known as "his final protege". She recieved her post-graduate degree in music composition from Moscow's Tchaikovsky State Conservatory, where she now teaches at the school's Theremin Center for Electroacoustic Music. For this performance, Lydia Kavina is joined by Barbara Buchholz, Wilco Botermans, and Pamelia Kurstin for much of the set, each an accomplished and respected thereminist is her/his own right. The show, part of Moog Music's Ether Music 2005 Conference, consists of two sets. The first begins with a few classical compositions, including pieces by Saint-Saens, Chopin and Tchaikovsky, with piano accompaniment by Virginia McKnight. Kavina then moves into modern compositions written for theremin, as well as a bit of lounge and surf music. The second set continues with modern compositions for the theremin, as well as a 14 minute improv piece featuring 4 theremins and a table-full of Moogerfoogers and various analog devices. Thanks to Ether Music/Moog Music, Lydia Kavina, Barbara Buchholz, Wilco Botermans, Pamelia Kurstin, Virginia McKnight, & The Orange Peel for making this one of the most exciting nights of live music I've ever experienced...
