Greg Macainsh: bass & vocals Bob "Bongo" Starkie: guitar & vocals Red Symons: guitar & vocals (lead vocal on Smut) Freddie Strauks: drums, percussion & vocals Skyhooks were arguably Australia's first supergroup. Their debut album Living In The Seventies (released 1974) was an enormous hit despite the majority of the songs being banned from Australian radio due to their "risque" nature at the time. Selling the equivalent of 20 gold albums at its release, the album remains one of the iconic Australian rock albums. At the height of their success Skyhooks Australian record sales were outstripping the biggest international acts of the time & the band enjoyed a controversial reputation due to the sex, masturbation and drug references in their lyrics and on-stage banter at their live shows. The band toured America in 1976 and found it hard to gain airplay due to the very Australian nature of their lyrics and they were also largely written off as Kiss wannabe's because of their outrageous stage costumes and the make-up that both guitarists used. While in America the band recorded their third album 'Straight In A Gay Gay World' that did little to increase their sales in the U.S. The band returned to Australia and recorded a further two albums before line-up changes and decreasing sales took their toll and they called it a day in 1980. Reunions followed in 1983/84, 1990 & 1994. Tragically, singer Shirley Strachan, who had carved out a successful TV career after Skyhooks demise, died in a plane crash in 2001. This recording was part of radio station Triple J's Live At The Wireless Classic series a few years ago. The original tape had apparently deteriorated badly over the years and significant work was done to bring it back to a reasonable broadcast standard. It stands as a very good testament to a fabulous live band. The show was recorded at the State Theatre in Sydney on 1 May 1975 during the tour for the 2nd album "Ego Is Not A Dirty Word". |
