Note | The sound on this show is great (see below). However, some of the transitions between songs sound a little funny. I'm not sure the nature of it and it doesn't happen between every track. If you are a real stickler about perfectly transitioning tracks it may bother you !! I think the person who converted the show may have tried to cut down on the audience between songs and may have shuffled the tracks to organize them among the five discs. I don't mean they are out of order.
The soundboard matrix feed was recorded on a Sony D8, first in line. The ambient audience recording was made with Microtech Geffell MG210s > Hosa silver conductor cables > Oade M148 > Oade SBM-1 > Tascam DA-P1. I then load the recordings into the computer using Samplitude 2496. EQ and levels were applied to the matrix recording, then it is time synced with the audience recording. The whole show is 4 hours and 45 min. Each CD has to be mastered with an appropriate amount of compression/expansion to make the recordings sound good even on a boom box. All of this work is done at real time. That is to say that the recordings are played and played and played, over and over again until the right sound is achieved. Files are then created that will become the CDs. Since all the recordings are made at a 48 kHz sample rate they have to be converted to the 44.1 kHz of CD format. The conversion will take about 18 hours of computer time alone. All recordings are processed on the computer as 32 bit files, they the have to be converted to the 16 bit CD format as well in a separate process. Index marks are applied, hopefully when each new song starts and then they are ready to burn. A one hour CD only takes about 5-6 minutes to burn. Overall, the entire project will consume about 50-60 man-hours, not including the recording itself. A labor of love.
