Comment | This was the 3rd (and probably last ever) performance of these songs. The Secret Songs are Costello?s first excursion into the world of opera. The current song set draws inspiration from Hans Christian Andersen?s infatuation with opera singer Jenny Lind, known as ?'The Swedish Nightingale'? in her time. According to Costello ?The songs ..tell a story that I have imagined existing between the lines of Andersen's biography and some of his most famous tales. They speak of a misfit's love for an unattainable woman and a struggle between a huckster and someone who composes music in secret." The Secret Songs, commissioned by the Royal Danish Opera, will have its premiere during the 2006/2007 season at Takkelloftet in Copenhagen's new opera house.
