"In Concert" - Gateway Theatre, Edinburgh, 1980 Broadcast by Scottish TV 1980 This recording: TV Broadcast "Super Channel" 1987 Quality: Mono, A Lineage: Cable TV -> JVC Stereo System -> Maxell XLIIS Tape -> NAD Tape Deck -> Macintosh PowerBook G4 -> Bias Peak 4 > AIFF -> xAct 1.4b28 -> .shn Significant tape/broadcast hiss but compared to the two different DVD versions I have of this show, the sound is richer, all together better sounding. This should exist in a better version somewhere - I taped this from my TV set when I was 14, ca 1987. (Note to self: Make sure to ask everyone for a better video source of this show, since both my DVD versions are utter crap). Super Channel was a short-lived (?) TV channel broadcasting several now well-known live shows such as The Police's Synchronicity Concert and several other 80's bands live performances now released on DVD, again and again. This however, a 30-minute "In Concert" show produced by Scottish TV, was re-run a gazillion times but never commercially available. I managed to find out when the next re-run was and taped the audio using my JVC tape recorder. I didn't have a VCR so unfortunately no video source from my part... Strangely enough, I have yet to find a better version than this. It MUST be out there, and I would LOVE to hear and/or see it. Audio only or video. The real gem in this short show is the version of "Ommadawn" which is absolutely stunning. Everytime I see or hear this version I envy the people sitting there in the audience, half of them seemingly partially interested. In my opinion, a far better version than the Knebworth performance of July 21st of the same year (1980), available on the out of print VHS "The Essential Mike Oldfield" which is floating around as a LaserDisc-to-DVD transfer in the trading pool - also highly recommended. There is some confusion regarding the date of the actual show, probably because the show was taped earlier than the original broadcast (obviously). This page here has the date of the show as 26 Feb 1980: http://www.mikeoldfield.it/mikeoldfield/dai_fans/roberto_tosi/materiale.html "1980 SCOTTISH TV - LIVE IN GATEWAY THEATRE (EDINBURGH) ? 26/2 : Sheba, fantastic Ommadawn excerpt, Tubular Bells pt.2 excerpt, Sailor?s Hornpipe." ...but this site has it listed somewhere in december 1980, probably when it was broadcast for the first time, I don't know: http://tubular.net/tours/ I'm hoping this show will surface at some point in a better version. The least awful DVD version I have is on a bootleg compilation DVD with tons of other stuff that can't be seeded here. Enjoy! PH August 2005 |
