J-Card Comment | The Chemical Brothers pull all the stops out to bring Ultra Fest NYC to a successful conclusion. A slightly annoyed Timo Maas left the main stage early, to make room for live act MYLO, who promptly disintegrated and after two songs bow out all together, siting technical problems beyond their resolve. Meanwhile, New Yorks late-night musical experiment gone awry, Liquid Todd, fills in as a hurried Paul Oakenfold stuffs his face with food in anticipation of an early start and a quick reversal of where this party is heading. But Pauls set is plauqed by the gremlins of the day, and it fades in and out, while quizzical techs run around and scratch their heads. Only hope can keep this together, as the Chemicals stage rig is pulled up front and center and the opening beats of "Tommorrow Never Knows" slowly crystalize into "Hey Boy, Hey Girl" and the party is off. A real solid set as the boys weave through 50 non-stop minutes of Block-Rocking beats, only to encore for a half hour more, where the use of "cold cannons" filled the floor with blinding white-out conditions as the strobes flashed and the music pounded, disorienting and exhilerating, ultimately revealing the golden path, and resolution to a day where both nature and fate conspired to derail. A solid recording as well (4/5), not nearly as distracted by the talking as I was during the show, but it does get going at points. Clean and upfront sounding , i decided not to track this one and leave it as one big file. As I would not venture a guess as to the setlist, my tracking would be arbitrary at best. If some wise soul might post a cue sheet after they give a listen, that would be great. Also note that "Tommorrow Never Knows" was removed from the very beginning of the file to avoid any political confrontations, and starts with the "live" band playing "Hey Boy, Hey Girl". This editing also enables the show to be burnt to one audio disc. Enjoy! |
