Coming off a disastrous performance the night before in Oakland Ca., opening for New Order, Ed and Tom rise to the occasion, and the crowd eats it up. Lush and loud with an over abundance of bass (as if that were even possible) the Chems rip through their musical repertoire at a slightly faster pace, making room for as much of their aural ecstasy as they can cram into an hour and a half. Hands waving, fists pumping, beats blasting, this is where the boys do it best. Large festival crowds are the norm for these guys, and they know how to deliver, unrelenting for the first hour, a non-stop auditory and visual assault as the images hit the screen behind them at breakneck pace, never given a chance to burn into the conscience, flooded in the green glow of the laser lights twirling around the tent. As they come up for air with the first lull (after Star Guitar) you can feel the ranks getting bigger as the tent shrinks and the entrances clog up with gawkers as Coldplay, Fantamos, Zap Mama and Spoon all finish their sets well before the 12 o'clock curfew leaving leftover bodies with more energy to burn. The last half hour leaves little time to regroup as Ed and Tom continue the electronic assault battering the now swollen crowd into submission, wailing "You are all my children nowwwww", showing each the way to the golden path, and finally letting everyone settle into their own private psychedelic reel... This is probably one of the better sets from the festival, but Im gonna need more time to sort the whole thing out in my head first. Setlist help provided by the kind folks at thechemicalbrothers.com, although I know its not 100%... Quality is 4 out of 5 here, drop a half point if the few outbursts from the crowd distract you, otherwise, Enjoy! |
