| Comment | The existence of not one but two Rutles bootlegs? In 1995, that would have seemed as inconceivable as a Rutles comeback album. But, there was an official Rutles comeback album, Archaeology; there was a Rutles bootleg, Rehearsal; and now, with Hard Days Rut, there's a second Rutles bootleg. There's some repetition between these and Rehearsal, but they're not redundant in relation to each other; Rehearsal has more than half a dozen tracks that don't appear here, and Hard Days Rut has many songs that don't appear on Rehearsal. In part, that's because Hard Days Rut is not strictly a Rutles album (if such a thing exists from a fictitious group). There's a Bonzo Dog Band track; two rare Bonzos BBC cuts; four songs by Grimms (a 1970s post-Bonzos Neil Innes band); a version of "I Must Be in Love" which, although not credited, seems to come from the broadcast of a Rutles clip on Saturday Night Live and has a different arrangement than ones that appear elsewhere; and "My Little Ukulele" and "Knicker Elastic King," 1990s Rutles tracks that only appeared on non-U.S. editions of Archaeology. There are also nine songs identified only as "Ron, Dirk, and Barry Pre-Rutles," whatever that means. And, there are some demos, rehearsals, and alternates of material that appeared in the original made-for-TV Rutles film, All You Need Is Cash (several of which are also on Rehearsal). So it's a bit of a jumble ? not that such a situation is uncommon on bootlegs ? and not everything is explicitly Beatle-esque parody (like the very vicious and right-on Dylan satire "The Old Gay Whistle Test," which is likely an Innes solo performance that has nothing to do with the Rutles project). Rehearsal is certainly a more coherent collection, and a more complete set of unreleased recordings directly related to All You Need Is Cash. However, from a purely musical standpoint, Hard Days Rut is a better listen in some respects, and also gives a more well-rounded view of the Rutles and their side projects (which are mostly Innes').
