CommentThis is commonly referred to as the demo sessions for Vs. However, this is more likely a rough mix created for the band to determine sequencing and changes. Most of the versions on here are nearly identical to the final Vs. cuts musically. The most notable differences are the absence of the intro to Go, and the addition of a few seconds of studio ambience before Glorified G. The vocals, however, are different from what finally made it to Vs., albeit very slightly. The differences are most noticable on Glorified G, where one of Eddie's parts is not recorded yet, and in a few of the subtle lyrical changes on some of the band's most famous cuts ("she holds the hand WHO holds her down", "UNITED by fear"). Alone is very different from the version that eventually made it to B-side status. Eddie has a whole other vocal part on this recording, and before the outro, there is a little guitar lead that didn't make it to subsequent versions. Indifference seems to be a completely different vocal take, as are bits and pieces of the other tunes. This is well worth checking out for anyone serious about studying Pearl Jam's recording procedure. This is obviously transferred from an analog tape, and putting all of this information together, it seems as if this was sourced from one of the copies the band gave to Epic when the label wanted a progress report on the record.
