This was a benefit concert for the family of Calder Spanier, a SF saxophone player who was probably best known for his work with Charlie Hunter Quartet. He died under tragic circumstances in late 1997 on SF's Bay Bridge, struck by a car after his own car had broken down. He clearly had a lot of amazing friends and was an amazing person, and this concert is testament to that fact. A solo album of Calder's material, featuring guests Charlie Hunter and Scott Amendola, is available at www.aheadbehind.com http://www.aheadbehind.com/CalderProject.html The following is a bio from Charlie Hunter's website about his former bandmate: Calder began his career as a saxophonist in the early-80's in Montreal. The son of Canada's renowned trumpet player, Herbie Spanier, he spent the majority of his time living and touring in Europe with bands ranging from rock to jazz. An extremely prolific composer and masterful improviser, Calder was unarguably one of the best saxophonists in the Bay Area. In addition to his work with Curvature, Calder recorded two albums for Blue Note with the Charlie Hunter Quartet. Before this, Calder had played with Charlie on the streets of Europe at a time when both musicians were honing in on their individual sounds. In addition to the saxophone, Calder played guitar and composed many of the tunes the Quartet played, and was about to release a CD of more jazzy vocal pop tunes he had written before his tragic death on December 4, 1997. Calder was on his way back from a gig in San Francisco when his car stalled on the Bay Bridge. As he went to fill his car with gas, he was struck by on oncoming vehicle. His death is a huge loss for the Bay Area music community. Anyone who had the opportunity to catch the Charlie Hunter Quartet live could easily see he gave 120 percent to the music. Many have expressed their opinion that they had never seen another alto saxophonist play like he could. He will be missed forever by all those who knew and loved him. |
