J-Card Comment | This is an interesting show for a couple of reasons. First, Neil claims in the show that this is the first time that "Rockin' in the Free World" is played live anywhere. This song would later go on to become a standard of many of Neil's future shows as well as covered by numerous bands (Pearl Jam, The Alarm, Big Country). Second, it includes a few "rare" Neil songs in the setlist. The song "Box Car" was recorded for a never released album entitled 'Times Square.' This album was pulled by Neil at the last minute, after radio stations had begun to receive their copies of the album. The material, save for "Box Car", a 'This Note's For You' era song, ended up on both the rare 'Eldorado EP' and the 'Freedom' album. The now Out-of-Print 'Eldorado EP' was released only in Australia and Japan. It contained five songs, three of which eventually surfaced on the 'Freedom' album. The other two songs appear in this set: "Cocaine Eyes", and "Heavy Love." As studio release of 'Eldorado EP' is not readily accessible for public purchase, the inclusion of these two tracks in the setlist is something of a rarity. One could argue that this show documents the beginning of Neil's revival from a decade long slump which plagued him for much of the 1980's. This set is several months before the critcially acclaimed release of album Freedom in October 1989, arguably his best release since the Live Rust set released nearly a decade earlier in November 1979. |
