Note | This one is strange. I mean really weird, and confusing, for many reasons. Let's go play-by-play.
- Parallels starts out with a mediocre, sort of muffled sound. Suddenly towards the end of the song, an odd sort of phasing takes place, the sound shifts from muffled to significantly better, but a bit tinny and oddly compressed sounding for an analogue recording. Still good nonetheless for a '77 recording. Nothing to complain about. Just odd. (On reflection, I think this Must be an effect of a tape deck transfer, or type of cassette used, etc.) - The recording volume then gets shoved down during ISAGP. Steve seems to have a guitar short-out, and Rick tries to cover for him on keys. On second thought, it may not be the volume so much as a -possible- hiss reducer (Dolby Noise reduction) on a tape to tape transfer. - The volume level seems to return in the middle of CTTE. Very nice sound. The volume (with highs and hiss) stay up there until AYAI, where it seems to get reduced again. Still good sound, just missing the complete dynamics. - Dynamics and hi-highs return for Flight Jam-Awaken. Sweet sounds. Probably my favorite Flight Jam. But Awaken cuts out just as Jon is climaxing his 2nd "Like the time I ran away .." Horrors! - To continue the path down the of the bizarre, the recording cuts .. to the next track where Awaken starts all over again! But, it sounds like either a different recording, or a more generated recording of the present show. This lasts for 6 1/2 minutes, where that recording of Awaken cuts back into .... - The original, 2nd gen version of Awaken!! What? Confused yet? So am I. But it doesn't cut right to the point where it left off before ("Like the time I ran away .."). Instead, it throws you into the middle of the keyboard - harp - chime solo section. This time the song plays all the way through to the end, and the ending is recorded. Next project would be to join those separated cuts of Awaken (if I were good with such things). - The show finishes off with rousing versions of Roundabout and YIND, in various sound quality states. - More confusion: after the YIND encore dies down, my copy has 2 mystery live versions of Wonderous Stories and TOTC tacked on at the end. Where these are from, who knows. Now, as if this wasn't enough, possibly the ultimate bizzarro aspect to this show (which has already been touched upon) - is the way it is tracked on these 2 discs. I have no idea what the person was thinking who transferred this to CD. Below is the breakdown in all its exhaustive, confused detail: Disc One 1) Firebird Suite, Parallels, ISAGP, CTTE, Wonderous Stories, Colours of the Rainbow, TOTC (part 1) [45:02] 2) TOTC (part 2), Tour song, AYAI, GFTO [19:33] Disc Two 1) Flight Jam - Awaken (cut at end) [18:51] 2) Awaken (alternate or generated version I think. - Cut) [6:47] 3) Awaken (original version from track 1, entering in the middle of song), Roundabout, YIND, mystery live Wonderous stories & TOTC [45:26] |
