| Note | Day of ticket sale - The show sold out in 30 seconds! Somehow I snatched one. Fast-forward to day of show: I'm listening to my marginally-legal, leaked copy of Lateralus that I'd had for a couple of weeks prior to the album's release, waiting in line 4 hours along with hundreds of other Tool-heads. Enter venue: It's super-small! Holding no more than a couple thousand, it's a club as small as venues they were playing on the Fall '96 tour. The anticipation in the building that night was immense. There was a certain feeling. Tool back for the first time in 3 years, and launching an epic tour. - Almost like witnessing something historic, at least for those who like this band.
The crowd (and band) was electric that night. Listen to it on the recording. Everybody mass singing (sometimes screaming) the lyrics to the older songs, and thrilled at the newer songs, even though they didn't know them. Check out "I'll keep digging" in Stinkfist, or "My Shadow" in 46&2 for examples. The band was still getting used to playing this stuff live, so the songs aren't as tight as they would be. But they are played with more energy than they would be all tour. One of the greatest Tool shows I've seen, and likely the last time I'll ever see them in such a small venue. More info on the recording: My copy is flawless with smooth track transitions. Also, just before Aenema, a girl on the floor got on the shoulders of another guy and flashed the band, provoking Maynard's response of "Oh I'm sorry to have been so rude. Nice tits. Thank you." In all of his sold copies, the taper edited out "tits." Apparently the only people that have an unedited clone of the show are a couple close trader friends. |
