| Note | Not really sure what to make of this one. At times this sounds like a crappy soundboard recording, it's sharp, and there is that much isolation and lack of crowd. But the ample amount of distortion and some compression destroys any notion of that. What is for sure is that the taper is super quiet (and so were the people around him), and super close. But he did not adjust his clipping levels well.
Performance: 2 things: 1) I think the entire band indulged in far too much Saki the night before (and perhaps the day of). And 2) The PA and stage monitor levels were WAY unbalanced. Typical of a festival (especially outdoors at a Ski resort) with other bands on the bill. Limited set up time, Knobby can't find the sweet spot, etc. So, Adam's guitar starts out CRANKED way too high, Maynard can't be heard, and The Grudge is a sloppy mess. Volume levels continue to be turned up and down all through the show (likely on the stage monitors as well), the band continues to make mistakes, and Maynard continues to sound like shit. At one point towards the end of Lateralus, MJ either loses mic power or just stops singing altogether. Not a good one performance wise, but still enjoyable to hear. The Japanese crowd didn't seem to mind, as they were very appreciative, especially when Maynard did his best to speak to them in their language. Here is a translation of what he says to the crowd, kindly provided by Erik W. (and his girlfriend): Sober intro: sounds like he is saying, "Jibunno ishi wo takamero," which literally translates to "Raise (or lift) my will." Before Parabola: sounds like "Pojitibu na nanika wo umidase sabakino chi wo wasureruna." Translates literally to: "Create something positive - don't forget you have blood which can judge." Before 'Lateralus': "Mata Aou" literally means "See you again someday" but is used as "See you soon." |
