The Complete Ultimate Elmore James Flac Box Set
1958-63

Elmore James 1918-1963 RIP

This 4 disc box set is lovingly converted from discs I bought in Amsterdam in 1992. These have been digitally remastered and constitute virtually every known Elmore James recording from 1958 up until his death on May 24, 1963, and a selection of the best from 1953-1957. You will no doubt recognize quite a few of these songs have been covered by artists like ABB, the Band, BB King, Elvis, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Black Crowes, Gov?t Mule, Clapton, Cream, etc, to name a few off the top of my head.

At some point I will amass and compile a more thorough set for the years 1951 (from the first known Elmore recording, playing guitar on Sonny Boy Williamson?s ?Eyesight to the Blind?) through 1957.

Elmore?s first song credited to him, ?Dust My Broom? (with Sonny Boy on harmonica) was released in 1952, and he spent much time in Chicago as a sessions musician. Ekmore was not well known among whites in his lifetime, and never had an album released in his lifetime. Yet he is one of the most influential bluesmen on the rock and roll world.

The first 3 discs consist of every known recording he made under his Fire, Fury, and Enjoy Records contracts. These studio recordings were made in Chicago, New Orleans and New Orleans between 1958 and 1963 and were produced by Bobby Robinson. The discs are remastered from the acetate reels off the mixer in the studio and sound extremely good.

Some may say it is for ?collectors only? because of the alternate takes, but it shows the searing power and seriousness of Elmore?s wrenching blues talent.

The fourth disc is less clear in its origin. It is titled ?The Very Best Of Elmore James?, but does not contain any of the Fire, Fury or Enjoy material (so the title is a clear misnomer). I believe after much listening these tracks are from 1953-1956, and were recorded for either the Chess or Sue labels. While most sound like remastered tapes, a few tracks are probably sourced from vinyl 78?s.
