Birth Of The Blues By All Three Probably the last Sinatra/Rat Pack show I'll get out on STG before Christmas. This is one of the more well known Sinatra boots out there. It's a very good time in a small venue with Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. The Summit are in peak form here, with a brisk performance, funny jokes, and great chemistry between the three. Legend has it that the guys performed for free, as a return favor to mobster, and owner of the Villa Venice, Sam Giancana. Supposedly Giancana had helped deliver money and "extra" votes in the 1960 Presidential election, that tipped the electoral college votes of Illinois over from the Republicans to the Democrats, and thus gave the Presidency to Kennedy. This was supposed to get the Feds off Giancana's back, but the crackdown on Mafia crime contintued, now from JFK's brother, and attorney general, Bobby Kennedy. The idea was that the crowds who came to see the Villa Venice shows would later spend money at the nearby clandestine casino and on prostitues, and thus pay Giancana back a bit. It was also around this time that the FBI was paying attention to Sinatra and his connections to mob men like Giancana. Sound quality on this boot is quite good. Some tape hiss in the background, but not significant. Other than that, this would be 10/10. It should be pointed out there are a handful of official "Villa Venice" recordings out there, three that I know off, plus a number of semi-legal versions. The three commercial Villa Venice products, however, are a cross-section of songs from the five concert dates at the Villa Venice. The guys played five shows, and as far as I know, no single commercial version contains a whole concert, let alone the one from this date. I therefore consider this a liberated bootleg, and it does not infringe upon any commercial release of the same exact show. If you download and enjoy this bootleg, I encourage you to see out the commercial Villa Venice discs as well. |
