Note | Hello all,
As some of you may know, a new uncirculated tape of The Who's early show on June 8, 1969 at the Tyrone Guthrie Theater has surfaced. In conjunction with John over on WhoWeeds, we're teaming up to offer this show to everyone. This WhoBoots tree will be audio only. The folks on WhoWeeds will handle SHN. Before going any further, I'd like to give a big thanks to Rev. Mike In Minnesota for offering to seed his source making this all possible. According to the Who Concert File and the Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere books, The Who rolled into Minneapolis to play two shows - one full performance at 7:00 P.M. and a shortened 45-minute show at 9:30 P.M. A four day break would follow these shows before the Who wrapped up the tour playing in Los Angeles and San Francisco. This is the early show and is typical of Who shows during this first touring of Tommy. The playing is VERY tight and the quality of the recording is quite good. The source is slightly bassy but fairly clear with good separation of the instruments. There's no reason not to sign up for this tree! Amazing that a tape like this has only surfaced now!!! THE DETAILS Below are the notes Rev. All fades applied where breaks occurred on source cassette -Sound in all four sections of the recording was slightly different, all attempts were made during transfer to match them -Warbly sound in I'm Free is from source cassette. The story: I was working with a woman in the summer of 2000 who was a big fan of The Who, she knew I traded and collected live music and she let me borrow the tape of this show which she said she had copied directly from the man who taped it. After making the tape, I sent my copy to my friend Guy for transfer to CD. Guy made one copy to CD and subsequently misplaced it as well as my cassette. Recently, Guy had located the tape and was going to mail it to me, but then he passed on. I was able to get the tape from his mother's house during the funeral week and after getting home again, began to research if this show circulated at all. I found it did not and began the process of transferring it. I hope everyone enjoys this gem of a show. Thank you to those people who responded to my original post on alt.music.who for all of their information and assistance in spreading this show. This as well as all future Transfers and Seeds is dedicated to the memory of Guy Gimbrone (2/6/68 - 9/9/03), my friend and the greatest archivist I have ever known. |
