Tech Note | Notes on Garaj Mahal from 19 Broadway, Fairfax CA, 11-01-03, taped by Bob Cogswell
To record the band in this room, I climbed a ladder to clamp my booms, removed from their
usual mic stands, to the pipes the lights are mounted on to get near the PA mains without
access to the floor underneath them, as it was to be full of people dancing whenever the
band was playing. I had the help of Art Granoff in putting the gear up. This was the small-
est room they played in the three day run in NorCal. It was pretty satisfying to see them
in this venue as it is quite nicely set up inside. A recent remodel and expansion into the
storefront that used to be next door has made the club very fan/band friendly. A good sized
stage for a small club and a good sound system, decently run, are among the amenities.
Gear used:
Stage mic: Crown SASS P Mk 2 stereo condenser PZM (pressure zone microphone), sited at the
edge of the stage, quite biased to the right side of the stage due to the band member siting,
with Alan in the middle of the stage and Kai and Faraeed to his left. This put Eric to Alan's
right, and Eric's stage volume was low as his main sound in the room was from a direct box
connection to the SB. I needed to be in front of the louder stage sound to give a good stereo
image of the bass, guitar and drums, but it sure looked funny.
House mics: Crown CM-700 cardioid condensers, clamped to the lighting pipes, about 2 feet
from the mains.
Mixer: Shure FP-42
A/D converter: Apogee MiniMe
Tape deck: Tascam DA-P1
Transfer: Tascam DA-20>M AudioDelta24/96>Samplitude7.0>wav>shntool>CDR/MKW. |
