" This is a compilation of very early material recorded at the Gaslight Cafe. 5 Dylan folk tunes but mostly traditional blues and folk material. Original tape quality is not very good but a good look into his early stage presence. Several songs feature simple but very good guitar arrangements. Vocals are clear and phrasing is interesting. I've never been a huge fan of his earlier work but I like this disc more the older I get. "
" No Dylan fan should be without this amazing recording. Glimpses of genius aplenty. This is the essential unofficial recording of the young folk singer. His voice is so rich on this tape, you can listen to it over and over again and still be amazed. Get this one, and the "Hotel tape" from December 1961, there are not many more pre-1963 unofficial recordings you really need."
" Beautiful stuff in very nice quality. Aside from very early renditions of great Bob tunes (Don't Think Twice, Hard Rain, Hollis Brown, etc.), this cd also has some very interesting covers. I think it is neat to hear how Dylan played "Barbara Allen" in the early 60's as compared to his magnificent 1988 versions. The earlier one is much slower and quite moving. Also, it is neat to hear an early version of "Cocaine Blues", which Bob has been playing frequently these past few years. But, don't get me wrong...the whole disc is great. Get it...NOW!" |
