Admittedly, little here was uncirculating before, but there are some new songs (complete Sheffiled acoustic set, complete Liverpool electric set, the entire Sydney concert). Oddly enough, Scropio included part of the Manchester show here, even though the concert is now officially available. The cuts on this set, however, come from the 3-track tapes, NOT the usual mono Nagra recordings. If you read the official Live 66 booklet, you'll notice they discuss the relationship of these two source tapes, and mention that bits of Johanna and Desolation Row had to be filled in from the 3-track b/c the Nagra had run down. Well, here's the first 5 songs of the acoustic set in stereo from an acetate of the 3-track, and it's atmospheric, gritty, and rather fun. The ne Sheffiled acoustic set is gorgeous--a finely nuanced, charismatic performance in excellent (though not quite Guitars Kissing) quality. The Liverpool electric set also sounds excellent, and is, of course, quite a stunner, performance-wise. Sydney is all-around quite nice, though there are some sound problems due to Bob's poor mic technique and the fact that the electric set all seems to be badly-off-balance (very upfront vocals, while the band is distantly muddy). Packaging is top-notch, with two booklets, a small poster, flashy box, and color gatefold carboard sleeves for the 5 "sets" within the box. Within each cardboard sleeve, there's a printed paper jacket for each disc, plus a mylar sleeve to fit inside the paper sleeve and protect the disc. Really well thought-out. Now if someone would just find Paris 5/24..." I don't have the packaging he refers to, but there are links to .jpgs on the internet. |
