This is worth the price of admission just to hear Neil's rendition of the classic Otis Redding song "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay." "Left my home in Canada..." he sings, his voice as distinctly different from Otis's as imaginable--and you know what? It works. As does this entire set, which basically plays as a greatest hits-type affair bolstered by the inclusion of several unreleased songs and a few other relatively rare renditions of old favorites, such as "Motorcycle Mama" and "I Believe in You." In addition to the above, highlights include the unreleased "Separate Ways," a powerhouse take of "Powderfinger" (Question: when is this song not a highlight? Answer: Never!), Neil's unreleased ode to motorcycles "Live to Ride," "Down by the River" and "All Along the Watchtower." Booker T. & the MGs provide more than adequate backup; where Crazy Horse gets by on brute strength, they deliver their punches with more of a deftness and subtlety. Neither approach is better or worse, mind you, but it is a noticeable difference. Of note, Pearl Jam backs Neil for a fiery "Rockin' in the Free World" (they were the opening act that tour). An audience recording, Dream Machine is actually pretty good! |
