Comments:
There were many problems in what was otherwise a very good audience recording. For starters, the
whole show was playing too fast...I compared the pitch of the songs to several other shows such
as "Happy New Year" and adjusted the show to play at the right speed. The top end required some
boost for clarity and this was coupled with a digital extraction of the tape hiss from the
recording...here is where there is nothing else that comes close to Sonic Solutions...it has no
effect on the actual material and left the recording sounding first generation, unlike some pc
plugins that can cause the material to "swish" and burble. The show was run through a spectrum
analyzer and the frequencies re-balanced to be flat over the whole range, leaving the sound more
natural and cause the band to sound like it had moved "closer". I also fixed the level
inconsistencies by normalizing the entire show. The problem was where the first few songs in the
show were quite high in level but by the end of the show the sound level had decreased
significantly on the CD. The indexes for the tracks have been re-set to align properly with the
song starts. Also I noticed that for some songs, the stereo image was "lop-sided" in that it
often seemed to be more prevalent in the right channel. This image shift was stabilized and
re-centered for the whole show, track by track. Crowd noise can be a bit disturbing on this
recording. A bunch of girls near the taper repeatedly scream "I love you (insert band member
here)!" Sometimes they just make noise and don't even say anything. Thankfully, the worst of this
noise is between songs. The segue between "All I Want Is You" and "Bad" is awesome, with Bono
mumbling a few words before picking up with "If I could, you know I would, if I could, I would
let it go. It's desperation, separation, in temptation...".
