previously and has been lost.

All of these tracks appear to be performed by Trey, Mike and Fish, along with members of the band Lambsbread. (For example, there are two guitarists and a keyboardist in the Scarlet -> Eyes, and Page didn't play with Phish until May 1985.)

Enormous thanks to TODD BERMAN for finding this tape in a box of tapes that he had collected in college in the mid-1990s, and for emailing Kevin Hoy (founder of The Spreadsheet) about it. Thank you, Todd and Kevin! This recording should be up on The Spreadsheet soon.

For all you vets out there: this Hunt's material was on side B of the tape, and it was mislabeled "5/19/85," consistent with its lore (see, e.g., Phish.com). And on Side A? You guessed it. The early, incomplete version of 12/1/84 Nectar's, with only the Scarlet->Fire->FOTM, Slave, Spanish Flea ("w/ band introduction") and Skippy on it.. And the handwritten jcard? It has the noses-with-legs-and-feet-riding-in-and-on-a-cadillac artwork on it. Classic. This tape's overdubbing tabs aren't even punched out. The labels on the tape itself for both sides A and B are mislabeled, with 12/1/84 claimed to be the "first gig," and "5/19/85" the "second gig." 

This tape belongs in an Archive. In this era of TS->InterWebstreaming and immediate MP3 post-show downloading, this tape is an historical artifact in the history of recorded live music. It is also one of those recordings that somehow managed to escape the tape collections of many of the most obsessive-compulsive Phish tape collectors in history. Of course, its failure to circulate widely in the previous 26 years may have resulted from its quality. (I'd have probably given it a "C-/D+" on my last tapelist, circa 2000.)

TAPE NOTES: This copy of this recording has been tracked, but its impressive hiss and overall sound quality have not been altered in any way. The pitch is off, but not to the point where Trey sounds like his balls are being pinched. There is a cut into Scarlet. There is also wow and flutter in the Scarlet, but fortunately it occurs before the jam segment. There is an incredibly long segue into Eyes of the World, and Mike is stellar in it. It was tricky to determine where to track the start of Eyes. (I relied on Mike, as well as the many versions of Eyes that Phil Lesh had similarly started.) At its conclusion, Eyes starts to segue into Whipping Post, which is abruptly cut. There is then a random, inexplicable clip of aud applause, which has been lovingly preserved. Midnight Hour is complete. (Someone other than Trey, Mike or Fish is on lead vocals for Midnight Hour.) There is a cut into Fire Up the Ganja and, unfortunately, this is also an incomplete version that cuts out. (Someone other than Trey, Mike or Fish is on lead vocals for Fire Up the Ganja.)

The shownotes on the Phish.net setlist for this show, as of today (July 7, 2011), read: This setlist is likely incomplete. It is believed that all of these songs were performed with members of Lambsbread. On the only known recording of this show, Whipping Post cuts almost immediately after it begins. This gig was originally booked as a Lambsbread gig, but it was cancelled, and taken over by Phish, who played with members of Lambsbread. Fire Up the Ganja is sung over the music of Fire on the Mountain.

REMASTERED (12/01/07):

As this was my first seed, I naturally made some mistakes the first time around. I made all changes by going back to the original file set by Mike Wren and redoing the process, so this is as fresh as it gets. The new changes from my previous seed are as follows:

1) SBE fix

2) Encoded at 44.1 kHz (The last source I did was accidently encoded at a "false" 48 kHz. Whether this makes any difference sonically has not been determined.)

3) Different speed reductions at 6% and 8%, respectively. (I believe I was a hair off the first time around, so I wanted to use this opportunity to make the changes.)

4) NO CUTS! (I made some unorthodox, millisecond cuts before between songs, due to my inexperience of pitch correcting at the time. These went largely unnoticed, as far as I can tell.)

These changes should make this source better for the long haul.

I got a tape of this show from Richard Wright, aka "Nancy," and his copy was made from Page's master. I don't know if this is a SBD or AUD, but given the AUD noise, my guess is that it was just recorded using mics near the stage -- and is an AUD.

This is an upgrade of the version of this show on the online Spreadsheet.

Shownotes from the current (2009-09-06) version of the Mockingbird Foundation/Phish Companion setlists file: This show contained the first known versions of Dog Log, Harry Hood, Possum, I Wish, and Revival. Trey remarked during the intro to Hood that "this one is a story of the man who lives directly across the street from us right now."(The house on King Street where Trey, Fish, and Brian Long lived was across the street from the Hood factory.) Slave was dedicated to “Brickle.” Trey’s humorous comments about being “back on Planet Earth” were in reference to the events at Goddard on October 26. This setlist is likely incomplete.

05. Frankenstein, courtesy of Jon Fishman, recorded "a capella" on Paluska's answering machine at some point prior to the April 1990 Colorado tour. Thanks to Franklin Malemud for recently reminding me of this version's existence, and to Ellis Godard for emailing us a .wav of it. This used to circulate widely on cassettes traded in the 1990s.


An 11/23/85 Godard (side A) / Trey's 4 Track Project (side B) cassette tape used to circulate pretty well, the quality degrading with every analog generation. I hope this is an upgrade of what you have heard and, if it is not, I apologize (and you can email me at cdirksen@earthlink.net to complain). I have not altered this recording with tools -- it is simply a reproduction via HHB onto disc of the cassette tape that I received in the 1990s.

I was generously given this music on a 90 min Maxell XL2S tape by a friend of Trey's. He (among many others) had received the tape from Trey as a Christmas present a few days before Christmas in 1985.

Mike has said that during this 11/23/85 show in the Godard cafeteria, he had a transcendent, peak musical experience. Listen to him carefully, ideally with no distractions. I realize, though, that it is difficult to hear him on this recording. Also listen for "Norwegian Wood" and "The Other One" during the "Whipping Post Jam," which doesn't sound much like Whipping Post, but which presumably is a Jam that arose from Whipping Post's composed opening section (unfortunately, this intro section doesn't circulate). But it is Trey who called this a "Whipping Post Jam" and so I'm reluctant to change the title to "Jam." I realize the recording quality is poor, but I swear to you -- IN THE NAME OF THE ALMIGHTY ICCULUS -- that this is low gen. (Again, if it does not upgrade you, I apologize, but do me a favor and email me a .wav of the DEG to compare it with what I have.)

Show Notes for 11/23/85 from the current (8/20/09) version of The Phish Companion setlists file: This list for Set III is likely incomplete, as the only recording that circulates fades in and out at points. The “Whipping Post Jam” fades in after Mike’s Song on the recording that circulates. This “Jam” contained jams reminiscent of The Grateful Dead’s The Other One and Dark Star. It also featured Norwegian Wood teases from Mike, and a jam reminiscent of the early intro to Harry Hood. Antelope fades in after the “Whipping Post Jam” fades out. The complete lists for Sets I and II are not known, although Mike has referenced the first set Wild Thing in interviews and in The Phish Book.

The Green Dolphin Street Demo is a post Bivouac Juan, pre White Tape demo that included some of the same material as the Bivouac Tape.
It came labeled to me exactly as that: Green Dolphin Street Demo 1985.
A few of these songs are earlier mixes of material that ended up on The White Tape.
Since it's precise origin is unknown - I hope nobody objects - expecially since the sound quality is by far inferior to the released version of the
White Tape and there are subtle variations.
It was likely a mix of material recorded on 4-track in NJ with Bivouac and in Burlington VT in 1985.

An 11/23/85 Godard (side A) / Trey's 4 Track Project (side B) "tape" used to circulate well, the quality degrading with every (analog) generation. I hope this is an upgrade of what you have heard and, if it is not, I apologize. I was generously given this music on a 90 min Maxell XL2S tape by a friend of Trey's, who (among many others) had received the tape from Trey as a Christmas present a few days before Christmas in 1985. As this friend put it, much of this tape "is the fruit of an entire semester of 4-track experiments by Trey . . . I remember him doing overdubs of all 4 vocal parts on YEM, and using the pitch control knob to vary the harmony."

Trey's "4 Track Project" is profound. Most of it was recorded in Fall/Winter 1985, possibly on Mike's 4 track, but I am not sure. Trey is his own worst critic and he may reflect back upon this music and scoff (or perhaps worse), but his creative genius, his humor, and his love of music brilliantly shine through in this material. Whatever he might think about his early music, he created this tape out of love for his family and friends, and it shows.

A few of these tracks appear on Bivouac Jaun, while other tracks (eg And So to Bed, YEM) appear on "The White Tape," which I hope you purchase from Phish.com, http://www.phish.com/releases/detail.php?ID=26. It is possible that some of the versions on here are somewhat different from those on The White Tape and Jaun; I have not analyzed them closely. See pages 13-14 of The Phish Companion 2d edition for more information.

The master cassette and my copy conclude with "A Last Surprise," i.e., 12/1/84 Skippy the Wondermouse > Fluffhead, featuring The Dude of Life. I debated whether to include it here, because it already circulates in low gen, it cuts on here at the very end, and it is "just" filler. But it is what Trey put on here as filler, so here you go. I also added two other Trey songs that I love as filler, just in case you hadn't heard them before -- the original version of Bliss, and Backwards Food.

And I have to say more about this original version of "Bliss," track 13, because I don't think it circulated that much (but I cannot remember). "Bliss" was dedicated by Trey to Kevin Cecil, a fan who had been shot in the back while walking a friend home in July 1995. He was rendered quadriplegic. Kevin was an engineering student at the University of Pittsburgh at the time. I had made a lot of tapes for Kevin in the mid 1990s and -- if I recall correctly -- I received a copy of this version directly from him (he had received his copy from Trey). He had been given a copy by Trey in 1995, long before Billy Breathes came out. Mike Sofranko (?), Kevin's roommate and another Phish fan, had apparently contacted
Phish to let them know what had happened to Kevin. Trey sent Kevin a tape of "Bliss" while Kevin was in the hospital,apparently in or around August 1995. This news made it to Rec.Music.Phish, so everyone knew
there was going to be a new song called "Bliss" released eventually, but almost no one had heard it. When "Cars Trucks Buses" debuted in Fall 1995, a few people ignored the description of "Bliss" that had been spread and decided that this new instrumental was "Bliss," and so there
were a small handful of Fall 1995 reviews that had "Cars Trucks Buses" listed as "Bliss." For the record. (And I want to thank Herschel Gelman for emailing me some of this background info in December 2000, because I hadn't recalled all these details!)
