Also thanks to Keith Litzenberger for his excellent recoding as well. Thanks to Jay Ashley and Darryl Hinko for their transfer and mastering/editing on the SBD source. And thanks to both Jamie Waddell and Todd Evens for their pristine transfers and excellent editing/mastering on the FOB. --------------------------------------------------------- Notes on the Source Material SBD (shnID = 75772) This is another strange 1991 SBD. Let me explain. Quite a few digital SBD's for the 1991 year are in circulation. I am sure some of you have noticed a sorta strange sound quality to them. What makes them sound they way they do is unknown to me. I'd call them too digital. They tip-toe along the edge of blurry. If I had to guess I would think a portable DAT deck was being fed an analog signal into the line in. And although the levels were set appropriately the deck was overloaded by 'too hot' a feed from the SBD. AUD1 (shnID = 96398) Nice and well balanced FOB. This upfront FOB grabs quite a bit of the sound but not as much atmosphere as you'd like for making a matrix mix. However, this does help the sterile, straight SBD out quite a bit. While it doesn't completely fix the strange "digitally" sound of the SBD it does help quite a bit. AUD2 (shnID = 98392) Another great sounding AUD. I love it when multiple source can be used to make a 5.1 and a stereo matrix. This doubles the options for the multichannel mixdown and also allows for more flexibility in the 5.1. Not just the standard SBD front and AUD in the rear. This also allows me to do high rez mixdown for each of the 6 channels as well as a high rez stereo mixdown of all 3 sources. --------------------------------------------------------- Tech Notes FLAC/SHNs were decoded to wave. Wavmerge was used to reassemble the tracks back to 1 long wave. CEP2.0 was used to align & synch all 3 sources (time compress and expand). SF8.0 was used for the EQ setting on the LFE and CTR channels. SF8.0 used to adjust the volume for the center, surround and LFE channels. SF8.0 was used to perform the hard limiting on the LFE channel. Surcode MLP was used to encode all six channels utilizing a lossless compression scheme. DiscWelder was used to author and create the DVD-Audio in 5.1 and created the ISO image file. This incorporates 6 channels of 24/48 wave files. - Mixed by dan@am-dig.com - ISO created 05-MAY-2009 - Artwork by dan@am-dig.com 300dpi - For best results print at the highest resolution onto glossy photo paper. (Editing: time compress/expand, EQing and of course the multichannel, multi-source mixdown for both front and rear stereo fields.) It is unclear exactly what we have in the way of high resolution. However what we have here would not be represented accurately in 16/44. In short, upsampling simply adds 000's to the end of the data stream where as this multichannel mixdown of three 16/44 sources does in fact utilize the entire data stream. I choose to preserve the extra data rather than chop it off. How much different does this sound? is this better? A little and yes. This is more accurate and has more dynamic range. 24/48 resolution versus a1 6/44 of the same material will usually result in very subtle but important differences. Most of it relying on the quality of the DVD-A player its D to A conversion. With that in mind this 24 bit copy is no different. Small but important gains over the same material in 16/44. This is just one man's take. --------------------------------------------------------- Lineup Jerry Garcia (guitar, vocals) Bob Weir (guitar, vocals) Phil Lesh (bass) Vince Welnick (keyboards, vocals) Bruce Hornsby (grand piano, according, vocals) Mickey Hart (drums, percussions) Bill Kreutzmann (drums, percussions) --------------------------------------------------------- Additional Formats This show is available in the following formats: 1.
