from a post on the Kimock list:

I'm posting a version of this to both the Living Daylights and Kimock lists;
for those of you on Kimock there is some Kimock content-even aside from the
fact that Jason and Tree are well known in the Kimock community.

I've known Jason and Tree since at least 9/18/98. That night of KVHW at the
Maritime, Ray White seamlessly weaved the line "singing happy birthday to Dr
Bob" into a verse of Spring Water. After the set ended, Jason came up to me
and told me it was his birthday too! After that I always saw Jason and Tree
at nearly every Kimock show within driving range of the Bay Area until they
moved to Maui a couple of years ago. Heck-until recently I always thought
they were already married; they've always had the look of a happily married
couple :-)

It's hard to imagine any better setting for the ceremony and reception than
The Plantation House in Olowalu, Maui, Hawaii! Olowalu is one of the dryest
spots in Maui; as I looked at the angry Black Clouds coming up the valley I
covered my mics and thought we were headed for a New Monsoon instead of
Living Daylights. But the West Maui Mtns sucked all the moisture out and
the rains were relegated to the rest of the island. The Plantation House
has a nice small grassy back yard which runs right up to the ocean. On the
tapes you can hear waves crashing and birdies chirping. There is a
permanent outdoor stage fronted by a small concrete dance floor. The yard
is dominated by an enormous Banyan tree, which served also as the
centerpiece of the awesome official wedding/show poster created by John(I
don't recall his last name; he's the same artist who created the gorgeous
Zero Hawaii '99 tickets with the Z E R O letters fading into the sunset).
This ranks up there with Horning's Hideout, the beach on the Big Island, and
the now defunct Jeremy's Carport Amphitheatre as fav outdoor venues.

First up in late afternoon was a 30 min set by a traditional Hawaiian
singer, and it set the mood nicely. The singer was also the official who
performed the wedding ceremony. As the wedding party traipsed down the
center aisle over a bed of bouganvilla petals, we were treated to
processional music composed, performed and recorded by...Steve Kimock! I
hear Tree had gotten SK to do this. It was about 5 min long, and was
something akin to a cross between Le Petite Groove and, say, an intro to
Cole's Law(but different from either of them). Hauntingly beautiful!

After thunderous applause concluded the ceremony, we were treated to a
cocktail hour set by The Living Daylights. Now I've recently followed the
Daylights to Italy and Maui, two of my favorite places on the planet, but
their music is so incredible that I'll follow them to Antarctica if that's
where their next tour is. This set of mellow songs was intended to be
background music as we had drinks, consumed appetizers(I can't spell hors
d'oerves), chatted and sat on the grass watching the waves crash. And what a
stellar set it was: Mayakovsky's Smile; Late Night, Early Morning; Loop jam;
Sassegado; Pike or Pine; and One Leg Standing. The Loop jam was especially
noteworthy-during Arne's lead over the loop multiple whales were jumping out
of the water into the air. But Arne didn't see them-he was in a trance with
his eyes closed as he played. Arne the whale charmer!

After that one hour set came dinner. Now my wife Shelley and I had nothing
but great food our entire week in Hawaii, but nothing is as memorable as the
Molokai yams we had that night! After dinner several close friends and
family gave toasts to the happy couple. Brian Martin of the Kimock list was
one of the, ugh, little toasters. I never knew that Brian and Jason were
friends in Richmond, VA before moving to the Bay Area in the mid to late
'90's. I first got to know Brian when he patched out of me at the Zero
Black Mtn Music Fest in NC in 10/97. Kudos to Brian, who I'm told had much
to do with organizing the wedding festivities. I didn't propose a toast at
the reception, but let's do so on the Kimock list!

The evening was capped off by a dance set from the Daylights: Soukous; Afro
Boogie->Eye R Us; Electric Rosary; Calder's Circus; Chez Arnesto; Adam's
Apple; Homo Volans intro. Jason told me he wanted the Daylights because of
their crossover appeal-the cocktail set charmed guests old enough to have
seen Coltrane and the late night set got not only the jamband fans up and
dancing, but the kids and teenagers as well. The Daylights were crossover
in another sense-all three are such great people that they became part of
the party, not just hired performers.

I have tapes of the wedding 3/21 shows, as well as the 3/19,20 preceding
gigs in Maui, if anyone out there wants to do the DAT->CD.

Cheers to the happy couple!
