Extracted, patched, and SHN by Syd Schwartz sydster@ix.netcom.com

Source info, discs 1 & 2:  SBD->DAT->CD (via standalone burner)->EAC (tested for accuracy 4 times on 3 seperate computers)->SHN

Source info, disc 3: Track 1 (Phil's organ donor rap) patched from FOB/DFC:ortf bar; Schoeps mk4> kc5-actives> cmc6> ad1000 (clamped to drinkrail), taper R. Clay; CD mastering McCloskey, SonyR500> AES/EBU monster cable> ZA2> SoundForge/CDArchitect> Plextor8x20->EAC->CD->EAC (tested for accuracy 4 times on 3 seperate computers)->SHN. Track 2 (Box of Rain) begins from DSBD source as on discs 1 & 2, but is then patched with same FOB DAUD beginning at 3:13 through the end of the show as this was missing from the DSBD. Tracks 3-7 are all SBD->DAT->CD (via standalone burner)->EAC (tested for accuracy 4 times on 3 seperate computers)->SHN.

There are several different soundboard sources of the 4/99 Phil & Phriends run coming into circulation as of early 2001. I have sampled 4 different ones (which are all that I am aware of as of mid-March) and this is by far the sonically superior source and mix.

FAQ about this version (the E-Jade Mix) April 1999 Phil & Phriends shows:

Q: How does this version differ from other the other soundboards in circulation

A: There are at least 3 other versions in circulation that I have heard. 2 of the 3 have one analog gen (one of those is pitched slightly slow). The other DSBD has additional cuts (i.e., Alligator is hacked) and has a different sound to it--the vocals are way out in front and the overall balance between the instruments is less than ideal.

Q: So why do you refer to this version as a different mix?

A: Conjecture on my part really. I've heard from more than one source that these shows were a good deal closer to official release than most people think. Close enough, that post-production work on the master tapes was underway (though I don't know how much, who did it or what the final sonic vision was supposed to sound like). My guess is that the other full DSBD was probably from the 2-track DAT master or the unmixed multi-track tapes, while this version has undergone some dB adjustments on an individual instrument level to provide the level of balance and overall presence. Again, this is pure guesswork on my part but I my hypothesis is backed up by several "can't confrim nor deny" answers I've gotten from a few folks in the know. If you have further info, conspiracy theories, or a good recipe for Peking duck, please get in touch with me via email.

Q: Why did you format this for 2 80 min discs and 1 74? How inconvenient!

A: Two reasons...1) This is how it originally came to me and 2) I think the overall flow of the show works better this way. Inconveniencing you was only the latent effect ;)

Q: Why didn't you patch the missing parts with one of the other soundboard sources?

A: First of all, as I mentioned, 2 of the other boards had analog gens. I actually gave it a shot, but found the difference in sound was actually more jarring from the analog gen boards than from the outstanding "drink rail" DAUD. And the other DSBD was missing the donor rap/Box of Rain encore entirely, so it wasn't an option.

Q: Do you honestly believe that this is the definitive soundboard source of this show?

A: Yes.

Q: OK, so lets accept for the moment that your theory on the source of these shows is correct. If they were in post-production, why are there cuts and missing segments?

A: My understanding from the Lone PhGunmen is cuts were intentionally introduced when these shows were given to family/friends so that leaks could be tracked.

Q: So does the circulation of these show pose a problem for the GD and/or Phish camps?

A: From what I've been told, there might have been an eyebrow or two raised a couple of months ago, but at this point its not an issue. Prior to 6 months ago, the widespread trading of this show could have caused utter mayhem, bedlam, chaos and the issuance of small craft advisories. On both coasts.

Q: Why call it the "E-Jade mix"

A: During the entire comparison process amongst the different versions, and the subsequent patching process, the volume coming from the stereo and computer speakers frequently woke my 18 month-old daughter, Emily Jade Schwartz. As she's had to endure repeated looping of miniscule and titanic excerpts of this music, and I'm a narcissistic proud parent, the moniker seemed only natural.
